FOOTNOTE: COMP-rehension
Probably the next step up from Jack & Jill competitions would be the “Strictly Swing” divisions (previously known as “Just Dance”).  Like in a Jack & Jill, you’re dancing lead-and-follow (no choreography permitted), and the music is chosen by the deejay, usually three shortened versions of songs in different genres and tempos. One variable you get to control is that you enter with a partner (or partners, in the case of “three-way” Strictly Swing comps).

Most Strictly Swing divisions mirror the Jack & Jill points-determined levels (Newcomer, Novice, Intermediate, etc.) and you can compete with someone in a different division as long as you dance at the higher level – known as “dancing up”. Costumes are not permitted, though couples will often wear matching or complimentary colours – as a convention, not a rule.

Just as there are Pro-Am Jack & Jills, there are Pro-Am Strictly Swing competitions where you get to invite a Pro (professional – teacher) to be your partner.

In recent years there’s been a spate of truly inventive versions, from the afore-mentioned three-way or threesome, to “High-Lo”, where one partner is over a certain age and the other is under, to “Bookends” (same gender), to “Switchly Swing” where partners take turns leading/following.

Please let me know if you have any questions – and see you tonight!!
