11JUL17 – Dressing for Success

It feels a little strange:  packing for a dance event, but not actually leaving town.  You still have to bring a suitcase, and everything you think you’re going to need for the weekend.

This year’s TOSHC (Toronto Open Swing & Hustle Championships) includes a few “theme nights” so I thought it would be appropriate to make a few suggestions of what to bring with you to the hotel.

  • Friday night “Blue & White” – dress in TOSHC/Toronto colours (may-be even a Jays or Leafs shirt?)
  • Saturday is Canadian night, eh? 😊 – “lumberjack plaid” is recommended, or perhaps your favourite Canadian ‘T’?

Planning to compete?  Dress pants are preferred over jeans or athletic wear.  Ladies, if you haven’t dance-tested that flowy, backless top it might be better to dress on the safe side (#wardrobemalfunction).  Gentlemen, depending on the division you may be dancing several heats in the Jack & Jills; be aware of how warm you might get, and wear something breathable.  For the Strictly comps it’s common – but not necessary – to match your partner in colour or tone, without being “costumey”.

I hardly go anywhere without a water bottle, and always bring snacks for the room.  Please remember that the hotel sells food and alcohol and it is strictly forbidden to bring your own alcoholic beverages into the public areas of the hotel. This is a liquor licensing issue – out of the hotel’s hands.  They don’t want to lose their license and we don’t want to get kicked out!  Room parties are fine – and fun!, but please be aware of noise levels – including when walking in the hallways at any time of the day or night.

Speaking of which, your room-mates may be on different sleeping schedules; earplugs and sleep masks come in handy.

12:00 noon – Levelled workshops auditions

**Your World Swing Dance Council standing determines what level of workshops you can take (ie: Newcomer/Novice, Intermediate, Advanced).  If you have no WSDC standing you need to audition to be able to take a workshop above Novice.  If you want to take a higher levelled workshop than your WSDC level, you would need to audition to be allowed into the higher level workshop.

Hustle workshops are similarly levelled using the Hustle Dance Tour points system.  Look for your points in the HDT Registry.  Again if you have no HDT points, you need to audition to take a Hustle workshop above Novice, and you would also need to audition to be allowed into a higher level workshop than the level you are in.**
